Best heard from Parksley on southward. Here's the history behind K-Love... The idea for a full-time contemporary Christian music station was conceived in San Francisco in 1980 by a popular Bay Area radio personality, Bob Anthony. Anthony thought that traditional Christian radio was not reaching the average person. His vision was to create a new, all-music station, featuring artists like Amy Grant, The Imperials, and Keith Green – a revolutionary approach in its day. Professional announcers would present the Gospel through brief vignettes, without adopting the "Christian-ese" terms and phrases. After several tries at purchasing a station in San Francisco, a small, non-commercial radio station was acquired forty-five miles north of the Bay Area in Santa Rosa, CA. The bankrupt station sold for $67,000. The dream for Bob Anthony became a reality on October 15, 1982, when "KCLB-FM, The Positive Alternative" signed on the air for the first time. In 1986, Bob Anthony moved to Portland, Oregon to start a new radio ministry, and Dick Jenkins replaced Anthony as KCLB's Station Manager. On September 12, 1988, a 9,000-acre brush fire destroyed KCLB's main transmitter building on Geyser Peak and the owner of the transmitter site was terminating the land lease. Another mountain-top location confirmed that the radio station transmitter could be relocated to 4,000-ft. Mount Saint Helena. Signal reports as far away as 125 miles from the new site were received from listeners who couldn't hear the station previously. Also in 1988, KCLB changed its name to K-LOVE. With satellite broadcasting and digital technology, K-LOVE slowly became a network of radio stations and FM translators (low-power repeater stations). K-LOVE's programming was now being delivered throughout the Western US as K-LOVE first expanded to San Francisco, Berkeley, and San Rafael, in 1987; Salinas and Monterey in 1988; San Jose and Fremont in 1989; and Redding, Los Gatos, Gilroy, Hollister, and Santa Cruz in 1990. Fresno, Chico, Merced, Portland, Salem, Klamath Falls, San Diego, and Phoenix were added during the early 1990s. Today, they have a long list of radio stations and FM translators including WAZP and one in Danville (106.7) WKVE.

Frequency Background:
Heard on entire portion of Virginia's Eastern Shore. Dropped "96X, New Rock Alternative" to "96X, Where Today's Music Lives" after a format tweak (Modern Rock to Alternative/Modern AC) at 7 p.m. on 4/7/2011. Dropped "106-1 Downtown, 96-1 All Around - 96X" on 3/7/2004 when sister station WPYA signed-on. Changed its COL (community of license) from Cape Charles VA to Exmore VA. Flipped to an alternative rock format, as "Extreme 96X," in July 1999. Was contemporary for a while before that and modern rock "96-X" before that. The original plan for this frequency back in the mid 80s was to take up where WGH-FM left off in 1983 with the end of its run as a classical station. The calls were to be WWGH. Instead it started as WIAV "Wave 96" with a pop format. It was then co-owned with WVAB-AM 1550. Bishop L.E. Willis later bought the two stations and then bought 92.1, later spinning off WVAB. Was known as dance/CHR 'Kiss 96' (December 1988 to May 1989) WKSV. Flipped from dance/CHR to Christian when WXRI (105.3) was sold in May 1989. Later flipped to WMYA 'Touch 96' (August 1991). When the owner of the new WKOC flipped from adult urban to Triple A, he agreed with the Bishop to preserve the urban adult format by actually running commercials on the new 'Coast' to listen to 'Touch 96'. Was sold to Sinclair Telecable from Willis Broadcasting in late October 1993. That's when 96-X ("Experimental Radio") was launched...October 25, 1993. Note: 96X has a low-powered relay in Norfolk. In 1995, they fired up their new translator [106.1 W291AE (ERP 250W)] which is best heard in downtown Norfolk to help eliminate signal dropout in the downtown area. Tidewater Communications, which owned rocker 'FM99' WNOR and '106.9 The Fox' WAFX at the time, filed a petition with the FCC to deny WROX a construction permit. WROX collected more than 3,000 signatures from listeners requesting 96X be granted the go-ahead which it was by the FCC.

Heard on most of Virginia's Eastern Shore. WOLC is a RDS station (station calls only 'WOLC' ). Background... In 1969, a local businessman, Vernon Downes attended a function in DC where he heard Rev Pat Robertson sharing his testimony about the start of the CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network). Driving home, Vernon says he kept thinking, "Why can't the Eastern Shore have a Christian Radio Station?" After expressing this thought to several friends, the idea began to gain momentum. Slowly the "community of believers" came together. The group was incorporated as a non-profit ministry known as Maranatha, Incorporated. After many years, the FCC granted permission to Maranatha to broadcast WOLC from the frequency of 102.5 MHz. The station that is now known as "Joy 102.5" went on the air on Christmas Eve, 1976. Today, "Joy 102.5" broadcasts with 50,000 watts, 24 hours a day. The station is a blend of music and talk programs. The music is a combination of hymns, praise and worship and light contemporary styles. The talk programs include live, national call-in programs, nationally known teachers like Charles Stanley, Dr. James Dobson, and Jack Hayford.

Frequency Background:
Consistently one of the top rated stations in Salisbury MD market. Airs Delilah in the evenings. Changed to WQHQ from WBOC-FM around 1980 after a divestiture of AS Abel Company publishers of The Sun who owned WBOC-AM/FM/TV in order to allow WBOC-TV to increase its power because of the arrival of WMDT-TV coming to the air. As it was, the FCC said Abel had too much signal coverage for one owner - thus the birth of WQHQ. Was sold to a newspaper publisher from SC, which continued the 'Beautiful Music' format of WBOC-FM. However very briefly (2 weeks), WQHQ became Q105, the 'Station of the Stars' and started playing what we now call Adult Standards. After a multitude of complaints, Q105 switched back to the Beautiful Music format. However only a year or two later Q105 began playing A/C Hits and have been ever since 1982. In ‘82 began calling itself ‘QHQ’ then ‘2Q-105.’ In 1985 was sold to Wolfson Broadcasting in NC then in 1989 to HVS Partners. Q105 stayed in the old WBOC-FM studios (where WBOC-TV is located on N Salisbury Blvd) until 1984 when the studios were moved to The City Center on Church St on the third floor (now where the United Way offices are) before moving to their studios on Winterplace Parkway in 1997. Before 1980 the 104.7 FM frequency was WBOC-FM playing a "Beautiful Music" (mainly instrumental) format, going back to its birth back in the early 60s.

Frequency Background:
Started LMA with Hola Media Network's WJWL/900 Georgetown DE in December 1, 2011 to program Spanish "Maxima." Was Urban Oldies "Studio 106" from 5/2009 thru 11/2011.
Went from silent to Urban Oldies "Studio 106" in May 2009. The FCC granted a CP (construction Permit) to move from 106.5 to 106.1 from the same location but more power in May 2009. Changed call letters from WKHW to WXSH on 4/13/2009. In Summer 2008, Bay Broadcasting's LMA with Great Scott Broadcasting ended in a dispute and the station went silent on 6/23/2008. WKHW/106.5 dropped Adult/Variety Hits 106-5 SAM FM on 8/13/2007 for Classic Rock (K-Rock) and adding Mancow's Morning Madness. This move was made when Atlantic Radio Broadcasting decided to sell their station (WRXS/106.9 Ocean City) which, at the time, was doing Modern Rock with Mancow mornings. Also, the market had two Adult/Variety Hits formatted stations, the other being Great Scott Broadcasting's "107.5 Joe FM" WKHI Fruitland MD.
Dropped simulcast of "Bay Country" WBEY/97.9 Crisfield to go Adult Hits (SAM FM) on 6/6/05 at 3 p.m. Bay Broadcasting, which has a LMA from Great Scott Broadcasting to run WKHW, had been running a simulcast of "Bay Country" on 106.5 when their other signal was on 96.9 (WBEY/Crisfield MD). WBEY moved to 97.9 with a much bigger coverage area; hence the no need for a simulcast signal and the new format on 106.5. Was "Oldies 106.5" - Delmarva's (Favorite) Rock 'N Roll Oldies Station playing 50s-70s Oldies using the "Oldies Radio Network" up until 8/14/03. On Saturday November 30, 2002, "Mix 106.5" flipped back to the Oldies format from Classic/Modern Rock. Carries Baltimore Orioles MLB baseball. LMA started with Great Scott February 2002. Used to have the WKHI calls.

Agreed and adopted by the FCC on 10/11/2006 to downgrade from a Class B1 to a Class A and move to 107.7, so that Cox Radio could move Alternative "Y101" WDYL/101.1 Chester to a new COL (community of license) -- Lakeside, move to a new frequency -- 100.9 and to increase its power/antenna height to 25kW and 328 feet (or any combination of). Station owners were compensated for the move. More on the frequency changes at FCC.gov. Split simulcast with WJNE/103.5 (AC "Lite Rock 107-5 & 103-5") on 3/1/2006 with a new format, Adult/Variety Hits -- "107.5 Joe FM." Moved to digital UHF18 at the end of June 2012. Permanently went dark in mid June 2012 to go digital. After the full-power digital transition in 2009, stopped rebroadcasting WTKR (CBS) Norfolk for WTVZ (MNT) Norfolk. Call letters changed from W44AD to W39CS on 9/24/2007. Changed power, antenna height early February 2006. Moved from channel 44 to channel 39 at the same time to eliminate interference to WCVW-DT/44 Richmond. The original CP for this station was taken out on 11/23/79. The County of Accomack owns a total of eight LPTVs (low-power TV stations) for the purpose of rebroadcasting programming from Hampton Roads TV stations (WAVY, WTKR, WVEC and WHRO each use two) to the residents of the northern portions of the county. NOTE: Depending on what part of Virginia's Eastern Shore a person is located in, one can also receive stations from Hampton Roads (south) and the Delmarva (north). |

NOAA Weather Radio [162.400MHz~162.550MHz]
162.475 KEC92 Salisbury MD
This frequency serves the northern parts of Virginia's Eastern Shore. Broadcasts at 1,000 watts of power 24 hours/day. The NWS office in Wakefield is responsible for programming. Background on NOAA Weather Radio... NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information direct from a nearby National Weather Service office. NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day. Working with the FCC’s (Federal Communications Commission) new Emergency Alert System (EAS), NWR is an "all hazards" radio network, making it the single source for the most comprehensive weather and emergency information available to the public. NWR now broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards - both natural (such as earthquakes and volcano activity) and technological (such as chemical releases or oil spills). Known as the "Voice of the National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NWR network has more than 480 transmitters, covering the 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories. NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal. Broadcasts are found in the public service band between 162.400 and 162.550 megahertz (MHz) on seven NWR frequencies which are: 162.400 MHz, 162.425 MHz, 162.450 MHz, 162.475 MHz, 162.500 MHz, 162.525 MHz, and 162.550 MHz. Broadcast range from the weather radio transmitter is approximately 40 miles. The effective range depends on terrain, quality of the receiver, and indoor/outdoor antennas. Before you buy a receiver, make sure your area is covered by one of the transmitters. For the latest list of frequencies and transmitter locations, check the NOAA Weather Radio web site -- nws.noaa.gov/nwr. Believe it or not, several automobile manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover and Saab) equip their cars with radios capable of receiving NWR broadcasts. Several manufacturers of car radios (Audiovox, Clarion, and Panasonic) sell in-dash units capable of receiving NWR broadcasts. Manufacturers of citizen band radios with NWR channels include Cobra, Maxon, Midland, Radio Shack and Uniden.
162.550 KHB37 Norfolk VA
This frequency serves the southern parts of Virginia's Eastern Shore and is the main frequency for the greater Hampton Roads area. Broadcasts at 1,000 watts of power 24 hours/day. Their antenna is located on the WTKR-TV tower in Suffolk with WVKL-FM. The NWS office in Wakefield is responsible for programming.
